currency strengthening vs currency appreciation 15-Nov-2010  anon
Please refer to questions 5 and 7 in the test called Currency Basic.

Suppose 7.8HKD=1USD

Is there a difference between the following questions:

If the HKD appreciated 20% against the USD, how many HKD would you need to buy a USD?

and

If the HKD strengthened 20% against the USD, how many HKD would you need to buy a USD?

so just to practice, the answer would be

7.8 x 0.8 = 6.24 HKD, right?

They both mean the same thing. We had the same question with different words just to ensure the users practised both meanings. Not very sure now if it's causing more hindrance/confusion than help?

If we hear more about this we might knock one of the questions and replace it with something different.

Yes - both mean the same thing

Appreciating & strengthening are one & the same. Therefore, the two questions have no difference.
